"Open water powerhouse" Germany wins 4 gold medals in individual world championships


Korean female swimmers ranked 38th and 39th respectively in open water swimming, which is called "unknown territory" and "marathon on water".


Lee Jeong-min (Anyang City Hall) crossed the finish line in 1 hour 2 minutes 30 seconds 10 in the open water women"s 5km final of the World Aquatics Championships held at Momochi Seaside Park in Fukuoka, Japan on the 18th and placed 38th out of 61 athletes.


Lee Jung-min ranked 30th out of 55 players in this event at last year"s Budapest event, the highest ever open water ranking at the World Championships.


Lee Hae-rim finished the race in 39th place, right behind Lee Jung-min, with a time of 1 hour 2 minutes 33 seconds 90.


Leonie Beck (Germany) crossed the finish line in 59 minutes 31 seconds 70 and won the gold medal one second ahead of second place Sharon van Luwendahl (Netherlands 59 minutes 32 seconds 70).


Beck, who previously won the open water women"s 10 km gold medal and became the first gold medalist in this event, won two gold medals.


Her bronze medal went to Ana Marcela Cunha (Brazil) who scored the goal with a time of 59:33:90.


In the open water men"s 5km final that followed, Park Jae-hoon (Seogwipo City Hall) scored the goal in 57 minutes 49 seconds 50 and rose to 34th place.


Seong Jun-ho (Korea National Sport University), who competed together, was 59th with a time of 1 hour 2 minutes 17 seconds.


Lee Jeong-min, Lee Hae-rim, Park Jae-hoon, and Seong Jun-ho, who finished the individual exhibition, will conclude this competition with a mixed team relay 6km on the 20th.


In the men"s 5km final, 10km winner Florian Bellbroc (Germany) won two gold medals with a time of 53:58:00.


Gregorio Paltrinieri (54:2:50) took the silver medal, and Domenico Acherenza (Italy, 54:4:20) took the bronze.


Germany, an "open water powerhouse", won two gold medals in the individual event with Beck in the women"s event and Bellbroc in the men"s event, sweeping all four gold medals in the individual event in the open water event.
